exposé

Someone once told me that the upload of photos strips away the veneer of mystery that clothes an online persona. With a face attached to it, i become ordinary, another girl next door. That's good; the sooner you understand this, the better.

Another person wrote me an email saying that he felt like he had known me forever but yet he still couldn't figure out what sort of person i am. Personality, to me, is constructed in layers, with a true self buried beneath surface defenses and the seemingly superficial roles of everyday social interactions. It's well known that people say and do things in cyberspace that they wouldn't ordinarily say or do in the face-to-face world. They loosen up and express themselves more openly. Researchers call this the 'disinhibition effect'.

Hmm.

Some, perhaps, feel that i'm not candid enough. Because i try to keep my life and this blog separate. Because i share no secrets offline. (Which i do actually, if one observes long enough.) Because i'm not as personable or brilliantly philosophical as i probably come across in these regurgitations.

They prefer my words to me. And i'm fine with that. Those who dared to tell the difference have chosen to live with it.

This is not a blog, they say. Blogs are about daily updates. About gossip, sensation and long intimate details. About baring your underpants to the world. And taking a poll on what colour it is.

And i'm fine with that.
